Joint London Girl Geek Dinner and Geek Dinner with Dr. Sophie Kain – Saturday 26th April
This is a Special Geekdinner. It will be my (Ian Forrester) last London Geekdinner, as I am moving to Manchester. I have also convinced the lovely women (Sarah, Nicole and Mel) behind the Girl Geekdinners that a joint event would be a great idea for this special geekdinner. And if that wasn’t enough, we have a fantastic guest speaker.
Dr. Sophie Kain is a very interesting woman. Shes most known for being on the 3rd season of the UK Apprentice where she admitted to being a geek. Although Sophie didn’t win the position at Sir Alan Sugar’s side, shes setup innovation company, Prior Kain Ltd and launched web venture entitled Toast and Trash. Sophie is highly intelligent, bubbly and full of life. Shes certainly someone you will want to share a couple of ideas with during a bottle of red wine.

Idea: London Geek Meet?
After organizing the London Girl Geek Coffees, I’ve had a lot of guy geeks mention they wanted something similar: a regular event where geeks can socialize and relax. The focus here should be on relax; it shouldn’t be about networking, but about hanging around with other geeks and doing something fun. And preferably in the weekend, away from work and worries.
Now we could do Geek Coffee, but I think we should twist that concept slightly. My idea is this: Geek Meet.
Instead of hanging around in a coffee place for a couple of hours, let’s meet up and start with coffee, but continue on and do something interesting. For instance, one week we could with a whole group to the Natural History Museum, the other week we could do a walk past the Thames. Hey, we could even do a picnic in Hyde Park!
It may well turn out after a couple of times that this is too ambitious and that we’d all much rather prefer Geek Coffee. That’s also fine by me, but I think if we give this a chance it could turn out to be a fun event. Before actually announcing it as a real event though (the first would be Sunday the 20th of April?), I wanted to hear all your suggestions and comments to see if people are up for it.
PS: If someone can come up with a better name than Geek Meet, feel free to throw it in the group. I couldn’t think of anything better, but I’m sure some of you out there will.
London Girl Geek Coffee 3
After a great GGC yesterday, I’m glad to announce that the next one will be the 24th of April. The venue from last time (Smiths of Smithfield) was sadly not suitable for us; it’s too much of a pub/restaurant than an actual coffee place. Thanks to LJ though, I’ve discovered a perfect little gem for our next coffee: Ray’s Jazz Cafe in the Foyles at Charing Cross.
The last event was a bit rushed and I realized I haven’t even explained the reason behind Girl Geek Coffees. The idea is to have a more regular meetup besides the Dinners where girl geeks can come and socialize (sorry guys, it’s girls only). I was thinking of maybe holding the next one in the weekend, giving more people the chance to come along. Further, if the coffees turns out to be popular, it could always turn into a weekly event. What do you all think? Please leave comments behind and tell me how we can make this great!
So, here are the details for the next coffee:
When: Thursday, April 24, 2008, 3:00 PM – 6:00 PM
Where: Ray’s Jazz Cafe in Foyles (Charing Cross)
Cost: attending is free, cost for coffee/food will be on a “buy your own” basis
Upcoming: 470563
The cafe is located on the first floor of the Foyles and we’ll be sitting right in the back. It might be a bit small, but the coffee is great and the place even has wifi. If you have trouble finding the place or are running late, you can phone me (07521 294 391) or Twitter me directly (mseckington).

London Girl Geek Coffee 2
It’s a bit last minute, but the next Girl Geek Coffee will go on next Thursday. We’re going to try out a new venue and I’m hoping it’s suitable. It’s the Smiths of Smithfield near Farringdon tube (also a potential Geek Dinner venue). I haven’t tried it out yet (so fingers crossed), but I’ve heard a lot of positive things about it.

Venu for Next Geek Dinner
Just a little update on the location of the next venue. It is going to be in The Knights Templar (very near where we used to hold Geek Dinners). For more info on the next Geek Dinner read this previous post.
