Geek Dinner IRC Channel

Geek Dinners is going retro!

After some fun during the “Over The Air” conference (some people were playing keynote-bingo) we decided to launch our own IRC channel. Why? Because we can. Plus, it keeps those lengthy discussions between Geek Dinner attendees away from your Twitter feeds.

Where? irc.freenode.net, channel #geekdinner. Everyone is welcome and you are allowed to talk about anything! If you’ve never used IRC before (which means you were probably born after the introduction of the World Wide Web) feel free to ask us over Twitter/MSN/email for instructions.

Idea: London Geek Meet?

After organizing the London Girl Geek Coffees, I’ve had a lot of guy geeks mention they wanted something similar: a regular event where geeks can socialize and relax. The focus here should be on relax; it shouldn’t be about networking, but about hanging around with other geeks and doing something fun. And preferably in the weekend, away from work and worries.

Now we could do Geek Coffee, but I think we should twist that concept slightly. My idea is this: Geek Meet.

Instead of hanging around in a coffee place for a couple of hours, let’s meet up and start with coffee, but continue on and do something interesting. For instance, one week we could with a whole group to the Natural History Museum, the other week we could do a walk past the Thames. Hey, we could even do a picnic in Hyde Park!

It may well turn out after a couple of times that this is too ambitious and that we’d all much rather prefer Geek Coffee. That’s also fine by me, but I think if we give this a chance it could turn out to be a fun event. Before actually announcing it as a real event though (the first would be Sunday the 20th of April?), I wanted to hear all your suggestions and comments to see if people are up for it.

PS: If someone can come up with a better name than Geek Meet, feel free to throw it in the group. I couldn’t think of anything better, but I’m sure some of you out there will.
